Fatigue crack growth for through and part-through cracks in additively manufactured Ti6Al4V

چکیده

Critical aerospace parts require damage tolerance analysis to determine the inspection intervals in-service. Such analyses, based on linear fracture mechanics, that fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate relation stress intensity factor range is applicable independent of geometry and stress. FCG rates for laser powder bed fusion Ti6Al4V material conventional compact tension (CT) specimens have therefore been compared with a configuration more technically relevant from an industrial engineering perspective. The corresponded very well data obtained CT-specimens can be considered general predictions.

Growth of through-wall fatigue cracks in brace members

The total fatigue life of a brace in an offshore jacket structure is conventionally considered in four parts. N 1 is the number of cycles to initiate the first discernible surface cracking as noted by any available method. N 2 is the number of cycles to detect surface cracking by visual examination without the use of crack enhancement or optical aids. N 3 is the number of cycles until the first...

Modeling of fatigue crack closure in inclined and deflected cracks

A 2-dimensional, elastic-plastic finite element model has been developed to simulate plasticity induced crack closure in slanted and deflected cracks growing outside the small scale yielding (SSY) regime. The finite element model allows for contact between deformable surfaces to capture the complex contact interaction between the crack faces. Coulomb’s friction law has been used to model fricti...

Mixed-mode, high-cycle fatigue-crack growth thresholds in Ti– 6Al–4V: Role of small cracks

There have been few studies to date describing fatigue-crack propagation thresholds under mixed-mode loading conditions in the presence of cracks, that are small as compared to the characteristic microstructural dimensions. To address this need, the variation in mixed-mode, high-cycle fatigue-crack growth thresholds with crack size is reported for a Ti-6Al-4V turbine blade alloy with a fine-gra...

The Part-Through Surface Crack in an Elastic Plate

An elastic analysis is presented for the tensile stretching and bending of a plate containing a surface crack penetrating part-through the thickness, Fig. 1. The treatment is approximate, in that the two-dimensional generalized plane stress and KirchhoffPoisson plate bending theories are employed, with the part-through cracked section represented as a continuous line spring. The spring has both...

Enhancing the Structural Performance of Additively Manufactured Objects Through Build Orientation Optimization

Additively manufactured objects often exhibit directional dependencies in their structure due to the layered nature of the printing process. While this dependency has a significant impact the object’s functional performance, the problem of finding the best build orientation to maximize structural robustness remains largely unsolved. We introduce an optimization algorithm that addresses this iss...
